How Often Do I Need to Clean the ___________ (fill in the blank)?

Have you ever wondered how often the different parts of your house need cleaned?  Here’s the very scientific answer:

as often as they need it

I know – that sounds too simple but it’s the right answer.

There’s just no way to say for sure how often a room will need to be cleaned.  The frequency and intensity will vary from one household to another based on some of these criteria:

Kids (or grandkids)
Ages of kids (or grandkids)
Schedules
Size of house
Age of house
Personal standards
Time available
Energy available
Age of homemaker
Pets
Use of room

When I was newlywed, I didn’t have to clean very much.  Cleaning wasn’t a priority and we didn’t mess things up that much.  We didn’t actually have much to mess up.  After I had kids, I had to do more cleaning.  And more, and more and more!  But eventually the kids got old enough to help.  When I was doing my weekly chores today, I really missed the days when the kids and I did the weekly cleaning together.  They actually did a good job and it went a lot faster than it does by myself.  But I’m getting sidetracked.

When my kids were little, I had to clean a lot of extra things.  Things like:

door knobs
door jambs
hallways (they liked to walk up & down the hall with their hands on the walls)
spot clean furniture (kids are messy, you know)
spot clean carpet (kids are messy, you know)
bathroom, every day, sometimes more than once a day
sliding glass door (fingerprints everywhere!)
vacuum & sweep daily

But now the kids are grown and gone.  The grandkids come over regularly so I have to do a little cleaning as a result of their visit, but mostly the house stays pretty clean.  I hardly ever have to clean door knobs, door jambs or hallways.  And the bathroom just gets a daily touch-up.  The upstairs bedroom has been converted to my sewing room so it hardly ever needs (gets) cleaned.  I do still have to vacuum every day because I have a very hairy Labrador Retriever.

But here’s the thing – one cleaning system does not fit all.  Nor does one cleaning system last forever.  Things change and your system will, too.  What used to be cleaned weekly may only need to be cleaned monthly now.  What used to be cleaned monthly may need to be cleaned weekly.

Be alert for changes in your life that require changes in your system!  If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.  But if it is broken, fix it ASAP.  And never clean anything more than you have to!!!

How has your cleaning system changed lately?  What changes do you need to make?

  1. Patty, I’m with you on this. I used to clean on more of a schedule, but now that my children are older and almost gone, I clean as needed. One or two other factors that I think determine how often you have to clean include the season of the year (we have our windows open during spring and fall and dust accumulates faster) and just where you live…out in the country, in the city, in a well-maintained neighborhood, etc. When I lived in the country I had to sweep, dust, vacuum, etc. a lot more often. Kids tracked in dirt, etc. Now I live in Arizona where we have no grass in our yard and no trees. We also don’t have humidity to cause mildew and mold to accumulate. Things stay more maintenance-free here. All that to say, we have to change our cleaning patterns a little when we move from house to house, too. Loving your tips!

    • Great point about seasonal cleaning. It definitely makes a difference whether you’re in the city or country – or city/country like I am (country setting in the city). I forgot about that one!

  2. My husband and I are not big cleaners. We are actually really messing, so much it is kind of embarrassing…. but now that we have kids we are much cleaner, because well, we have to be. Except with dishes and laundry… those are seemingly never ending tasks these days…

  3. My stepkids have been staying with us for the past two weeks, so my cleaning system has definitely changed. I went from cleaning a few days a week to basically every minute of the day! Ha ha. This is a great blog. Found you on SITS. Have a wonderful weekend! :)
