I’ve gotten addicted to the baguette chips you can buy in the bakery section at the grocery store. They are SO good! But they’re a little bit expensive. So I decided to try making my own.
First I made a batch of Mom’s Italian Bread (it makes two loaves). This is my favorite Italian bread recipe and I use it often. I made normal size loaves but next time I’ll make smaller, thinner loaves so I’ll have smaller chips.
I sliced one of the loaves into very thin slices. I tried using my tomato knife, my large serrated knife and my electric knife. I had the best luck with the tomato knife. However, I read that the bread is easier to slice then if you freeze it briefly first. I’m going to try that the next time I make them.
After I sliced the bread into thin slices, I placed the slices on a greased baking sheet. Then I made a seasoning mix as follows:
- ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese (the stuff in the can works best)
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
I brushed each slice with olive oil. You can just spray them with cooking spray if you prefer. Then I sprinkled each slice with seasoning mix.
Bake chips at 375 for 8 minutes or until crisp. Enjoy!
