a newlywed asks for help!
My newlywed daughter just got her first washer and dryer and asked me for ideas about setting up a laundry room. I’ve been giving it some thought and the answer isn’t as easy as you might think. Laundry rooms come in all shapes, sizes and locations. Some are in closets with no extra room; some are at the back of a garage; some are in the basement without any kind of room (that’s her situation); some are in a room in the basement (that’s mine); some are in a room on the main floor; – you get the idea. So there’s no possible way to design a perfect laundry room without knowing the set-up, and each “perfect” laundry room will be completely different.
But all laundry rooms will have a few things in common – a few items you can’t do without. Here’s what I came up with for my must-have:
Must Have:
- Washer & Dryer
- Laundry Basket
- Laundry soap, of course
- Spray and Wash or some other pre-treat product
- Bleach (I don’t use bleach but I know my daughter-in-law would list this as a requirement)
- Laundry sorter (if you have room);
- Trash can
Then there are the optional items that just make it easier to do laundry. These are what I came up with:
- Clothes Hanging Rack
- Extra hangers
- Sink
- Drying rack
- Scissors
- Sorting/Folding Table
- Iron and ironing board
- Mesh bag for washing delicate items
- Shelf to hold supplies
- Walls – it’s nice to have walls instead of just a big open area
So that’s my take on the laundry room situation. What would you tell our newlywed? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below.

I recently added an old enamalware basin that hangs on the wall in my laundry room. This is great when I need to soak something or handwash lingerie. I don’t have to go searching for a bowl/basin that is big enough to handle that…and I don’t have to use my kitchen sick (gross!)
Great idea. For the first time I have a sink in my laundry room but it’s usually had something nasty in it so I don’t want to put clothes in it. I should find a basin for my laundry room, too.
