Does the thought of cleaning the whole house overwhelm you? Then don’t think about cleaning the whole house. All the time management experts say that when you have a big project to do, you need to break it into small pieces and work on one piece at a time. Cleaning house is the same way. It’s a big project that needs to be broken down into smaller pieces.
I’ll let you in on a secret. I’m really overwhelmed with my house right now. The main floor isn’t the problem. It’s the upstairs and downstairs. When my kids lived at home, they took care of those areas because that’s where their rooms were. Rachel lived upstairs and took care of all the cleaning up there. Danny’s room was in the basement and he cleaned it. But now, those kids had the nerve to move out and leave me with all the cleaning!!! And to make matters worse, the upstairs and downstairs rooms aren’t used that much so it’s hard to motivate myself to clean them. But they do need cleaned – at least once in a while.
To further complicate matters, we’ve had our house on the market so we’ve had to keep it showing ready at all times. Every morning I have a list of tasks I do to get it ready in case we get a call. I’ve also been doing a lot more cleaning as you go and picking up.
And that has led me to a new strategy for cleaning my house – at least for now. Instead of weekly cleaning like I’ve been doing for years, I’m switching to a new system. I’m going to schedule 2 or 3 smaller tasks each day. For example, today I vacuumed the upstairs, mopped the landing and stairs and dusted the main floor and upstairs. Of course, that’s in addition to my morning routine to prep the house for showing. It’s much less overwhelming than thinking about the whole house.
If it works for me it could work for you, too. Instead of thinking about cleaning the whole house, just do a couple of small tasks each day. Think about what needs done and put it on your to-do list. The benefit to daily cleaning like this is that it keeps your house in pretty good shape all the time.
So if cleaning the whole house is overwhelming, don’t think about the whole house. Just do a couple of things each day.
