Measuring Spoon Madness: My Problem and How I Solved It

Today’s article is shorter than usual because what I have to say is profound but so simple it doesn’t need much explanation.  Here goes.

If something isn’t working, FIX IT!  Don’t live with it unless you don’t have a choice.  If you don’t have a choice, figure out how to make it work.

I had an“ah ha” moment the other day when I was reaching for a measuring spoon and had to dig through 3 or 4 dozen (that is NOT an exaggeration) to find the one I needed.  This happens every time I need a measuring spoon!  But instead of doing anything about it, I just complain.  So the other day I decided enough was enough and fixed the problem.

I divided my measuring spoons into categories and determined I had the following spoons:

  • 11 – Tablespoons
  • 5 – ½ tablespoons
  • 4 – teaspoons
  • 5 – ½ teaspoons
  • 12 – ¼ teaspoons (no wonder I always pull those out first!)
  • 2 – 1/8 teaspoons (which I NEVER use)

I got rid of the broken spoon and the one with no label.  I kept a few of my favorite teaspoons, tablespoons and half teaspoons and put away the rest.  I can’t believe how much easier it is to find what I need.  I should have done this a long time ago!

Is there something in your kitchen that isn’t working and needs fixed?  What about in your house?  What about in your life?  If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, but if it is, what are you waiting for!

  1. Wow, look at all of those spoons. We have the same color counters. :) I need to go through and get rid of brokens, duplicates, and unused items in my “utensil” drawer. Thanks for the inspiration!

    • Yeah! That was my goal. Isn’t it funny that we hang on to stuff like that instead of tossing it immediately? I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve pulled a pen out of my pen holder, discovered it was out of ink, and then put it back! What’s up with that??? I’m trying to train myself to THROW IT AWAY – don’t put it back.

  2. Oh my gosh! Glad to see I wasn’t alone in the organizing department. For the past three weeks, I’ve been crazed … going through every drawer, closet, box and especially the garage and getting rid of sooooo much. What a great feeling! If it wasn’t tied down to something, out it went. It just feels so good!

    • I definitely agree! Can’t tell you how much better I feel after getting rid of those stupid spoons! Such a small thing but HUGE results!

  3. Hi Patty, I’m visiting from SITSGirls 31DBBB. Love your organizing idea for wayward measuring spoons. Thanks for sharing.

  4. You are so right. Organizing saves time and frustration. Measuring spoons and pens are both problems to be dealt with! Thanks for the tips.

    • Thanks for commenting. I can’t tell you how much easier it’s been dealing with fewer spoons. I would have done it a long time ago if I’d know what the payoff would be.
