Making a Grocery List

grocery list
I never go to the grocery store without a list of what I need to buy.  Regardless of whether I’m just picking up a few things or shopping for the week, I always have a list.  Why?  Because if I don’t have a list, I don’t get what I need. I walk out with one of those ‘As Seen on TV’ impulse buys and totally forget the milk.

grocery listMaking a list when you’re picking up a few things is pretty easy.  But the weekly list can be a little overwhelming.  Here are some ways to make it easier:

  • When you get home from the store, put a blank  grocery list on your refrigerator.   Then read through your register receipt and put on your new list  all the things you just bought that you know you’ll be buying again next  week.  For example:  milk, eggs, bread, cereal, etc.
  • During the week, whenever you notice something is getting low, put it on the list.
  • Finally, fill in with ingredients needed for  meals (a menu plan will provide that information – but that’s a topic for  another day).

That’s it.  The list is made and you’re ready to go grocery shopping.

  1. Hi Patty, Since I don’t have a blog to share, perhaps you might like this idea. Pat McElwaine and I came up with it back in the day: Monday – Chicken, Tuesday – Beef, Wednesday -Pork, Thursday – Turkey and of course, Friday-Fish, Saturday was MUST GO’s – all the left overs (everyone helped themselves since we didn’t cook that day…except to make something for the CROCK POT or Sandwiches sometimes A Big Breakfast for Lunch on Sundays! When Pat and I had a combined 12 kids under the age of 14…it was a life saver and we made sure we didn’t get too much of one kind of meat. 4 Beef Meals a month – who can say that in this day and age. We were known to “cheat sometimes” and do the fish on Wed. so we could have Sausage Pizza on Friday or Hotdogs etc. But it was a great skeleton to build on!!!

    1. Great idea, Joyce. I’ll share that when I get a chance. I’ve included something similar in one of my menu planning posts but not that same structure. I’m sure many of my readers would benefit.
