Onion Soup Mix – Make It Yourself!

I love Lipton’s Onion Soup Mix and use it often.  But it’s gotten expensive and sometimes I don’t have it when I need it.  So I did some searching and found a recipe on www.food.com so now I can make it myself.

Ingredients:

  • ¾ cup instant minced onion
  • 1/3 cup beef bouillon powder
  • 4 teaspoons onion powder
  • ¼ teaspoon crushed celery seeds
  • ¼ teaspoon sugar

Directions:

  1. Combine all ingredients and store in an airtight container.
  2. About 5 tablespoons of mix are equal to 1 1-1/4 oz. package.
  3. To make onion dip:  Mix 5 tablespoons with one pint of sour cream.

For a single serving:

  • 4 teaspoons beef bouillon granules
  • 8 teaspoons dried onion flakes
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • ¼ teaspoon seasoned pepper

Combine all ingredients and store in an airtight container.

  1. Almost every single form of bouillon, stock, and broth has msg in it so putting bouillon cubes in there to make it MSG Free is useless. MSG can be found under more than 150 different names. One of the most common forms found in bouillon, stock, and broth is yeast extract (or some version of those words) but it can also be hidden under any of those other 149+ names.

    1. Appreciate the info. This recipe wasn’t meant to be MSG free, though. It’s just a way to make it yourself if you want to save money or don’t have any onion soup mix on hand. I used it recently because I didn’t have any onion soup in my pantry.
