Laundry – Benefits of Daily Sorting

I don’t mind doing laundry and I have a system that works pretty well for me. I do laundry on Monday, Wednesday and Friday – usually about three loads each day. But I sort my laundry every day. I have a three-compartment sorter I keep next to the washing machine, and every day I gather all the laundry, take it downstairs and sort it by whites, colds and darks. I know it seems like a waste of time to sort it on off days, but here are a few reasons why I do it.

I’m not carrying as much at one time. My laundry room is in the basement so it’s a chore to take a fully loaded laundry hamper through the garage and down the steps into the laundry room. The hamper is heavy and awkward. Plus since it’s stacked pretty high, smaller pieces tend to fall off and that annoys me.
I can see at a glance if I need to do an unscheduled load of laundry. While I stick pretty closely to my schedule, if I need to do a load on another day, I do.
I’m not dealing with as many pieces of clothing at one time so I’m more apt to take a few minutes and check pockets, turn clothes right side out, unroll socks, unfold cloth napkins, etc. I’ve learned the hard way that it’s wise to take a few minutes to check pockets because my husband tends to leave things in them. I’ve washed nails, screws, paper (that makes a big mess), pencils, drill bits and occasionally a customer’s check. I hate when that happens.

So I’m not saying you should sort your laundry daily, but it definitely works well for me. If you’re experiencing any of the issues I described above, maybe you should give it a try. At least get a laundry sorter!
