For those who don’t want to bother with a ring-bound planner but a spiral or bound book doesn’t quite work either, Levenger’s Master Agenda might be just what you’re looking for. The planner has discs instead of rings or spirals which give you the flatness and smaller size of a spiral or bound book but the ability to add and subtract pages like a ring binder. I was skeptical this type of ring would work but it really seems to.
I was thrilled when Levenger offered to send me a Master Agenda to review. I’ve read about Levenger products and spent a lot of time on the website but I’ve never had an opportunity to actually see the product first hand. If you haven’t either, now’s your chance.
The Agenda sells for a reasonable $39. It has a plastic cover on the front and back. The cover is very nice, strong plastic and could be a great place to put post-it notes. The color scheme on the pages is a peachy orange and white. It has enough color to be pleasant to look at but not so much that you couldn’t decorate your pages if you wanted to.
The first few pages are pretty traditional:
Then we get to the good stuff – the monthly pages. The monthly pages are tabbed with the first six months in the first set and the last six months in the second set. Because the tabs are split into two sections, they’re large and easy to use. I would probably prefer smaller tabs so I could see all the months at the same time but it’s not a deal breaker for me. The monthly pages have split boxes for Saturday and Sunday. That is a deal breaker. I usually avoid calendars with split weekends because I have just as much or more going on on the weekend as during the week. There’s also no Notes column which I use a lot on my current set-up. Also, the monthly pages start with Monday – I do like that.
What I really love about this planner is the two-page layout for the week. It is SO functional! The days of the week boxes aren’t necessarily anything special but the right side is awesome! I love the Weekly To Do List, Weekly Goals section (which I would probably use for my menu) and the area for Notes. This is a nice change from a traditional weekly set-up and could work really well for me.
There’s no page finder like I’m used to but the pages have a tear off corner. I’d probably use a post it or clip to mark my place.
I know a lot of you are going to want to know about the paper quality. I didn’t want to write in the planner since I’m going to give it to some lucky reader but the pages are fairly heavy and would probably work great for most pens.
The Master Agenda also comes with a few sample apps:
There are also lots of options for customizing your planner, including leather covers, different size and color discs, pockets, post-its, etc. Levenger also sells a punch so you can make your own pages. The planners come in three sizes including compact, junior and letter. In case you’re wondering how the Junior compares, here it is next to a Franklin Covey Classic and a Personal Filofax:
I’m definitely a ring-bound planner girl, but if I was to switch to something else, this could possibly be my planner of choice (I’d just have to decide if I could live with those split weekends on the monthly page). I like the spiral binder feel with the ring bound options. It really does seem the best of both worlds.
