Round Steak with Gravy & Mashed Potatoes

This is one of our favorite meals – round steak with gravy (in the large crock pot), refrigerator mashed potatoes (in the small crock pot), salad (in the refrigerator) and homemade crescent rolls (on the cooling racks – recipe to follow on another day).  Yummy.  I just made it a few days ago but I might need to make it again sooner
than later!

The round steak with gravy is really easy and just sits in the crock pot all day.  The meat is so tender it falls apart when you remove it from the pot.  You can save the gravy and use it for the mashed potatoes but we don’t put gravy or even butter on these potatoes.  They are delicious without anything added.  I make a half batch when it just us.
When I serve them to guests, I make a full batch.  And for Thanksgiving and Christmas, I double the recipe.  You can’t have too many mashed potatoes.

After I make the potatoes, I put them in the refrigerator until about 1-1/2 hours before serving time.  Then I put them in the crock pot on low until dinner time and stir them a couple times so the bottom doesn’t brown.  You can also re-heat them in the oven or
microwave.  And these potatoes can be made a day ahead.

Round Steak With Gravy

  • 2 to 2-1/2 pounds round steak
  • ¼ cup water
  • 1 10-oz. can cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 12-oz. pkg. onion soup mix

Cut steak in 5 or 6 serving size pieces.  Place in slow cooking pot.  Add dry onion soup mix, water and mushroom soup.  Cover and cook on low six to eight hours.  (When I put the steak in the crock pot, I usually put a thin layer of sauce in the bottom of the crock
pot first, then a layer of meat, then a thin layer of sauce, then more meat, etc. – just to be sure everything is coated.)

Refrigerator Mashed Potatoes

  • 5 lbs. white potatoes
  • 8 oz. sour cream
  • 8 oz. cream cheese
  • ½ stick margarine
  • 2 tsp. onion salt (when I make a half batch, I put 1-1/2 tsp. onion salt instead of just 1 tsp.)
  • pepper to taste

Peel, cut-up and cook potatoes.  Drain potatoes very dry.  Put in a large bowl and add remaining ingredients.  Mash until creamy.  The cream cheese acts as a natural
preservative.  These potatoes can be made ahead and reheated in oven or microwave or crock pot.

You should share your steak and green beans in the oven. They are very good.

I SOOOO CANNOT WAIT until you share the homemade crescent rolls recipe! By any chance do you know anything I can supstitute for the cream of mushroom soup that DOES NOT have milk in it? I would love to try this recipe, but my hubby couldn’t have it!

    • Can your husband have any other kind of milk? Soy, rice, almond, acidophilous? Because if he can have any of those, you can make homemade cream of mushroom soup using one of those substitutes. I’m putting a recipe on the blog on Sunday for homemade cream of chicken soup. I could add the instructions for cream of mushroom soup if that’s an option. If he can’t have any of those other milks (my husband is lactose intolerant but he can have soy or acidophilous) then I’ll see what I can come up with. I’m sure there’s something we can substitute. One idea that comes to mind is plain gravy with some onion soup thrown in. That might work. Let me know about the milk substitutes.
