Take Precautions When Doing Something Messy

I color my hair about once a month.  I HATE doing it but it must be done.  Unfortunately, no matter how hard I try, I’m a bit messy.  I’ve gotten hair color on the wall, the floor, on my clothes and even on the white shower curtain.  After years of doing it, I finally learned to take precautions.  For example:

Remove the area rug.  I always color my hair in the bathroom so I remove the area rugs so I won’t get hair color on them.

Protect the shower curtain.  We have white shower curtains in both of our bathrooms, and I noticed recently that I got a little bit of hair color on the main bathroom shower curtain.  I don’t know what I was thinking by not folding it up out of the way.  I was guess I thought I was neater than I actually am.

Have a dark colored towel available to dry my hair.  We have white towels in the upstairs bathroom and they show hair color for a few days after I’ve colored my hair.  So on hair coloring day, I pull out the dark towels and use those instead.

Have a designated shirt for hair coloring.  I have a specific shirt I wear anytime I color my hair.  It protects my clothes and it doesn’t matter if it gets dirty.

Move anything out of the way that might get messed up.  Sometimes I rinse my hair in the kitchen sink.  When I do, I roll up the blinds in front of the sink and move anything out of the way that might get messed up.

These are things I do every time (well, obviously not every time) I color my hair because it can be really messy.  But I do these types of things any time I’m doing something messy.  It’s a lot easier to prevent a mess than have to clean one up.

What’s something messy you do that could benefit from a few preventative measures?
